KBS1TV ‘Sakshin Siblings’ broadcast screen
The new KBS health program <Sakshin Siblings> is a mobile health talk show in which comedian Hong Hyun-hee and KBS announcer Lee Jae-Sung visit sites with a ‘daily attending physician’, listen to real health issues, and seek solutions.
In the November 30 broadcast, Barunsesang Hospital Spine Center Director Lee Byung-gyu (board-certified neurosurgeon/Doctor of Medicine) joined as the daily attending physician and discussed firefighters spinal health. Hong Hyun-hee, who had to forgo attending an awards ceremony last year due to back pain, was especially pleased by the appearance of Director Lee, a back-treatment specialist.
In the episode, they met firefighters working on the front lines of various disaster sites such as fires, rescues, and emergency medical services, taking time to learn about spinal disorders arising from the grueling work environment and how to prevent them. Visiting a fire station, the Sakshin Siblings and Director Lee reviewed the crew members work conditions and identified the repeated back strain inherent to the job and the resulting pain.
In particular, the fire suppression unit must repeatedly squat and stand to connect heavy hoses, and a fire hose filled with water bears water pressure equivalent to about 80 kg, enough to make even three adults stagger when holding it. A firefighter with 22 years of service lamented, “There is nowhere that does not hurt, including the back, neck, and knees,” adding, “While working as a paramedic for 10 years, lifting and carrying stretchers left me with accumulated back pain.”
Next, Director Lee held a mini lecture under the theme ‘You must understand the spine to protect your body’. He pointed out that, by its very nature, firefighting imposes a heavy load, which inevitably increases the speed and severity of spinal disorders, and he explained the causes and treatments of herniated intervertebral discs (lumbar disc) and spinal stenosis, symptoms that require a hospital visit, step-by-step spinal treatments, and exercise methods, emphasizing the importance of routine care. Director Lee concluded with words of thanks and support: “Only if you are healthy can the public health and safety be maintained.”
At the end of the broadcast, actor Park Ki-woong, who had once been appointed an honorary firefighter, along with Hong Seok-cheon, who had received help from firefighters during a fire, and actor Lee Si-eon delivered messages of gratitude and encouragement to firefighters.
In addition, Director Lee named as the most memorable a firefighter who had left the field due to pain but hopes to return to rescue work once healthy, saying, “I want to help them regain health and stand on the scene again.” Afterward, the firefighter visited the hospital for back treatment, received therapy to alleviate back pain, and said, “I will recover well and continue work in the field.”
Meanwhile, the next story of KBS 1TV <Sakshin Siblings>, to be aired at 2:20 p.m. on December 7 (Sun), will be a special on throat disorders, with Barunsesang Hospital Spine Center Director Park Jae-hyun (neurosurgeon) joining as the daily attending physician.
