Comedian Park Semi confessed that she experienced depression when her ‘Seojun’s Mom’ character rose to popularity.

Park Semi said, “I was loved as Seojun’s Mom, but I was so busy I slept only 3~4 hours a day, and I even appeared on ‘Radio Star.’ Then the company gave me a week off, but I didn’t even wash my hair and just drank in my room. I felt extreme despair. I didn’t even want to go out,” and added, “I couldn’t endure that gap. Until then I had always found something to do to make a living. When time suddenly became empty, I didn’t know what to do.”
She continued, “In my head I was busy this year and did so well, but will I be able to do this much next year? Will opportunities like this year come again? I didn’t answer the phone and didn’t go outside. With all the curtains drawn, I didn’t even know how much time had passed. I cried myself to sleep, and emotions I had never imagined came over me.”
She said, “I lived in a semi-basement room until I became an adult. That’s how poor my family was. We didn’t have air conditioning at home. When I was in high school, I took the bus to go to a part-time job, and it was so cool in there. I saw older girls and boys meeting each other there. I thought I might get a boyfriend there, too,” and continued, “But there was a turning point that made me vow to earn a lot of money. One day our dog suddenly collapsed. They said it would die unless it had surgery immediately. The surgery cost $750 (1,000,000 KRW). Four adult family members were living together, but we didn’t have $750 (1,000,000 KRW). I was 23 then, and I thought I had to make money quickly.”
Having packed her belongings into two kimchi bags, Park Semi said she was surprised by how much her life has changed, noting that three trucks came when she moved recently. She said that while dreaming for a long time of becoming a comedian and living as an aspiring trainee, she made a living by working more than 50 part-time jobs.
