Actor Jo Jin-woong, whose criminal history was exposed, announced his retirement himself.
On the 6th, through his agency, Jo stated, “First, I bow my head in apology for having disappointed everyone who trusted and supported me because of my disgraceful past.”
He went on, “I humbly accept all this criticism, and as of today I intend to halt all activities and put a period to my path as an actor,” adding, “I believe this is the rightful responsibility and duty I must bear for my past misdeeds.”
He continued, “From now on, I will do my utmost to reflect so that I can stand upright as a human being,” and said, “Once again, I sincerely apologize. I am grateful to everyone I love and respect.”
Finally, Jo said, “I am sorry.”
Allegations were raised on the 5th that, in his high school years, Jo committed car theft and sexual assault and spent time in a juvenile detention center. Additional allegations followed that, even after becoming an adult, he was fined for assaulting a fellow member during his theater troupe days, and that around the time he appeared in the film ‘Maljukgeori Janhoksa’ his license was revoked due to drunk driving.
The agency issued a statement on the 5th saying, “After checking with the actor, we confirmed that there were wrongful acts during his minor years,” while adding, “However, we clearly state that this is unrelated to any act of sexual assault.”
It also said, “The actor himself takes with great seriousness and is deeply reflecting on the fact that there were moments after becoming an adult when poor judgment caused concern,” and, “We sincerely apologize to everyone who suffered harm and hurt because of the actor’s past wrongdoings.”
