Actor Kim Hyung-mook will deliver cheerful laughs to audiences this winter through the musical ‘Sugar’.
On the 14th at the Hanjeon Art Center Grand Theater, Kim Hyung-mook will make his first appearance as Jerry, a bassist, in the musical ‘Sugar’ (Sugar).
The musical ‘Sugar’ is based on the globally beloved comedy film “Some Like It Hot” (“Tteugeoun Geosi Joa”). Set in 1929 during Prohibition, it depicts the slapstick mishaps that unfold when two jazz musicians, having accidentally witnessed a gangland murder, disguise themselves as women and secretly join an all-female band to save their lives.
In the show, Kim Hyung-mook plays Jerry, a bassist who transforms into a woman named Daphne to escape the gang’s threats. Jerry is pure-hearted and quirky, a character defined by an unexpected charm that emerges in unforeseen situations. Through his signature nuanced comic acting and wide emotional range, Kim brings out Jerry’s distinctive appeal.
In this production, within a 1920s retro mood, Kim showcases the essence of a lavish show musical, adding vitality to the piece as he nimbly expresses both the urgency of being on the run and the mishaps of a man in drag through his acting and vocals.
Recently, Kim proved a broad acting spectrum that spans charisma and warmth as Van Helsing in the musical ‘Bloody Love’ and as Dong-uk in ‘Love Rides the Rain’. He also played the Ming envoy U Gon in the tvN drama ‘The Tyrant’s Chef’, earning praise from viewers for his reactions and lines in Chinese. Anticipation is building for the comedy he will present in ‘Sugar’, following his diverse performances across genres.
Ahead of the first performance, Kim said through his agency, “It is an honor to stand on the Korean premiere stage of ‘Sugar’, based on a legendary comedy masterpiece,” adding, “We have fully prepared dance, songs, and comic acting to deliver the romance and buoyant energy of the 1920s to audiences just as they are. We hope you will fully enjoy the warm laughter conveyed by Jerry and Daphne.”
Meanwhile, the musical ‘Sugar’ starring Kim Hyung-mook will run at the Hanjeon Art Center Grand Theater from the 12th through February 22 of next year.
