Broadcaster and former journalist Hong Hye-Geol said he was criticized after buying an expensive bicycle with the card of his wife, Yeo Esther.

On the 12th, the YouTube channel ‘Esther TV by Yeo Esther’ released a video titled ‘At last, does Hong Hye-Geol use honorifics?! The Yeo-Hong couple set their New Year plans’.

That day, the couple visited a restaurant for a meal. Seeing Hong appear wearing earmuffs with a bicycle helmet, Yeo Esther praised him, saying, “It is better than I thought. The helmet and ear warmers look rather nice.”

Hong added that the T-shirt he had on was also a 10,000 won item, saying, “I came today with a grim resolve. Lately on ‘Esther TV’ I get too much flak,” and went on, “There were two things: ‘Why do you speak rudely to your wife, saying you, you?’ and ‘By using her card, you are recklessly being extravagant.’”

He continued, “So I wore a $7.50 (10,000 KRW) shirt. The earmuffs also cost only a few thousand won.” In response, Yeo Esther hit the nail on the head, saying, “Is this not performative frugality?”

Even so, Hong said, “Today I will, if possible, use honorifics when speaking to my wife as well. It may be cringe-inducing, but I will try.”

Previously, when appearing on the YouTube channel of Yeo Esther, Hong revealed, “I took the card of my wife and bought a $9,000 (12,000,000 KRW) bicycle.”
