SBS ‘Unanswered Questions’

In November last year, the horrific truth behind the ‘Paju NCO wife death case’ came to light, leaving viewers in shock.

On the 13th, SBS ‘Unanswered Questions’ pursued the mystery of the death of the wife, Ms. Seon-a (alias), in the episode titled ‘Love, Maggots and Excuses’. Her husband, Mr. Jeong, claimed he did not know her condition, but circumstances revealed through the broadcast directly contradicted his assertion.

According to ‘Unanswered Questions’, when paramedics arrived Ms. Seon-a’s condition was sheer horror. Her entire body was contaminated with feces, necrosis had progressed and maggots were swarming, and signs of injuries from external force, such as rib fractures, were found. An expert said, “Necrosis must have progressed for at least three months,” adding, “It is impossible that a husband living in the same space did not notice the putrid stench.”

What especially enraged viewers was Mr. Jeong’s duplicity. While his wife was dying, he used more than 40 tons of water in a month, suggesting he tried to mask the odor. This is more than double the average for a four-person household. An expert analyzed, “To conceal the smell of a decomposing body, he likely kept water running all day and ran the air conditioner.”

Forensic opinions also pointed to the possibility of homicide. The multiple rib fractures found on Ms. Seon-a’s body were presumed to be caused not by CPR but by external force such as assault. This supports the possibility of abuse beyond mere neglect.

He also exhibited behavior that is hard to believe. About ten days before his wife’s death, he casually sent thanks for fermented skate that his in-laws had sent and shared everyday updates with acquaintances. He did not take his wife to the hospital, yet he took the family dog to a clinic, a stark contradiction that deepened the shock.

Although the two appeared to acquaintances to be a harmonious couple, they were not always on good terms. In particular, Mr. Jeong was mild in daily life but reportedly became violent when he drank, leading to marital fights. The production team confirmed content in a letter the wife wrote to her husband that appeared to mention a breakup, and the letter also contained pleas to take her to the hospital.

The ‘Unanswered Questions’ team focused on the possibility that economic problems and psychological pressure had distorted the relationship into a vertical hierarchy, and that Ms. Seon-a met her death thoroughly subordinated to her husband. Experts raised the possibility that their relationship was one of psychological domination (gaslighting). They further analyzed that the husband may have chosen neglect to avoid the responsibility that awaited him.

Mr. Jeong is currently under investigation on suspicion of aggravated abandonment. A legal expert said, “At minimum, a heavy sentence of five to more than ten years in prison is expected,” emphasizing that confessing the truth to the bereaved family is the only path to atonement.
