Received damages in a lawsuit over malicious comments related to a sex crime involving her brother-in-law

Singer and actress Son Dam-bi partially won a damages lawsuit she filed against malicious commenters who criticized her over the sex crime case involving her brother-in-law, former figure skating coach Lee Gyu-hyeon.
According to the legal community on the 7th, the Seoul Western District Court, Civil Single-Judge Division 12 (Presiding Judge Lee Gwan-hyeong), ordered two malicious commenters to pay $225 (300,000 KRW) and $150 (200,000 KRW), totaling $375 (500,000 KRW), in damages.
In the lawsuit, Son Dam-bi sought a total of $17,250 (23,000,000 KRW) in damages, but the court determined the amount of consolation money after comprehensively considering the content and level of expression of the comments and the overall circumstances. In addition, Son filed suits of the same nature against three other malicious commenters but withdrew them during the proceedings.
The bench stated, “The defendants used contemptuous expressions and profanity, thereby infringing upon the plaintiff’s personal rights. They have a duty to monetarily console the resulting mental harm.” the court ruled.
This lawsuit stemmed from a sexual violence crime committed against a student of Lee Gyu-hyeon, the younger brother of her husband, Lee Gyu-hyeok. Regarding this case, Criminal Division 1 of the Namyangju Branch of the Uijeongbu District Court (Presiding Judge Park Ok-hee) sentenced Lee Gyu-hyeon in January 2023 to four years in prison on charges of attempted rape, quasi-forcible indecent act, and violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes. He is currently incarcerated at Uijeongbu Prison.
In 2022, while such proceedings were underway, Son Dam-bi married Lee Gyu-hyeok, the elder brother of Lee Gyu-hyeon. Citing this, some malicious commenters hurled criticisms at Son, including “married into the family of a rapist”, “married for money, serves her right”.
Among them, against a commenter who posted particularly severe malicious remarks, Son Dam-bi filed a legal suit in February 2025.
