Actor Jeon Jong-seo shared her distinct reflections on taking part in a genre work centered on female narratives.
In an interview with Sports Kyunghyang held at a cafe in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the afternoon of the 9th, Jeon discussed the sense of responsibility she felt as an actress through the film ‘Project Y’ and its genre value.
The film ‘Project Y’ portrays the precarious journey of two friends, Mi-seon (Han So-hee) and Do-kyung (Jeon Jong-seo), who try to steal hidden illicit cash and gold bars to break free from a rock-bottom reality. As a two-hander led by two female protagonists, it has drawn great anticipation even before release, aligning with the recent increase in works featuring female narratives.
Regarding the recently more active slate of works with female narratives, Jeon said, “I think it is a very good phenomenon. I sought out all the related works,” opening the conversation. She stated, “I support the increase in good scripts that actresses can perform, as well as more directors and producers, and the growth of opportunities.” She added her conviction, “Was there not a time when such positions were virtually absent? The very fact that such space is now being created is positive.”
For Jeon, this project carries meaning beyond a simple appearance. At the press and distributor screening for ‘Project Y’ held on the 8th, she also said, “The very fact that I took part in a genre not easily made for actresses is of great significance.” Attention is focused on how this result, forged with earnest resolve beyond genre limits, will be received by audiences.
Meanwhile, the film ‘Project Y’ opens on the 21st.
