Director Kim Han-min, who wrote a box-office legend in Korean cinema history with the action period-epic series ‘War of the Arrows’, ‘Roaring Currents’, ‘Hansan: Rise of the Dragon’, and ‘Noryang: Sea of Death’, returns with his next film, ‘Sword: Godumakhan’s Sword’ (Production: Big Stone Pictures Co., Ltd., Bluefire Studio Co., Ltd. | Presented by: Redice Entertainment Co., Ltd., Solaire Partners LLC).
The film has finalized a powerhouse cast that spans the screen, including Park Bo-gum, Joo Won, Jung Jae-young, Lee Sun-bin, and Kim Hyeong-seo.
‘Sword: Godumakhan’s Sword’ is a blockbuster action period drama that unfolds when, in the immediate aftermath of Goguryeo’s collapse, a man who has lost his memory and become a slave enters a gladiatorial tournament with a legendary sword at stake.
Set in 668, right after the fall of Goguryeo, against the backdrop of Liaodong Fortress in former Goguryeo territory, the film ‘Sword: Godumakhan’s Sword’ adds cinematic imagination to depict on a grand scale how a legendary northern sword is reborn as a symbol of new hope.
This movie draws anticipation by putting front and center the Goguryeo gladiatorial action that has not been explored in earnest. Alongside this, in a massive circular arena built at Liaodong Fortress (Uri Hall) in the former Goguryeo lands, a gladiatorial tournament bringing together 16 northern tribesincluding the Khitan, Malgal, and Gokturkalong with each tribe’s unique martial arts and tactics and the fight for survival, is expected to deliver audiences an unprecedented sense of impact and catharsis.
Global star Park Bo-gum, beloved across both big and small screens, takes on the role of the amnesiac warrior ‘Chilseong’, delivering the most radical acting transformation of his filmography. From the desperate survival action as a slave gladiator to the hero’s arc of awakening as a national hero known as the ‘Red Wolf’, Park will cover a wide spectrum and stand before audiences with a powerful new face.
The role of ‘Gye Pil-haryeok’, who will stand in opposition to Park, goes to actor Joo Won with unrivaled charisma. As a cold, disciplined warrior competing in the tournament as the representative of the Gokturk, Gye Pil-haryeok forms a taut rivalry with Chilseong. Joo Won will present high-difficulty action using twin swords, heightening the film’s tension.
The addition of powerful actors with compelling performances and personalities further raises expectations. Jung Jae-young, as ‘Heuksugang’, the head of the Goguryeo Restoration Army (‘Damulgun’), is the mentor who forges Chilseong into a true warrior and will display strong leadership moving in secret for Goguryeo’s restoration. Next, Lee Sun-bin, who rose as a box-office queen with ‘Noise’, transforms into ‘Maya’, a member of the Goguryeo Restoration Army, showcasing a mysterious, intense charm and action. Lastly, Kim Hyeong-seo, who is building a firm footing as an actor, joins as ‘Injeong’, Heuksugang’s daughter, injecting fresh energy into the film.
‘Sword: Godumakhan’s Sword’ is a project into which director Kim Han-min, who opened a new horizon for Korean action period films from ‘War of the Arrows’ through the Yi Sun-sin trilogy, has poured years of effort since the planning stage. In particular, by incorporating AI technology from the R&D stage, it was selected for KOCCA’s K-content AI leading project, and based on such technological prowess, it completes gladiatorial action where the diverse martial arts and tactics of 16 tribes collide, promising spectacles and fun never before seen in traditional period films. Director Kim Han-min said, “If ‘War of the Arrows’ showed the speed and spirit of our people’s ‘bow’, then ‘Sword: Godumakhan’s Sword’ seeks to capture on screen the sharp yet weighty energy of the ‘sword’ that cuts through a chaotic era after Goguryeo’s fall. Going beyond mere stabbing and slashing, audiences will encounter a heated, distinctly Korean worldview where the pains of the times and an individual’s calling collide. Through the most spirited Korean motifs‘Goguryeo’ and the ‘sword’please look forward to the birth of a new K-action hero film that will captivate audiences worldwide beyond Asia.”
Building a solid cast lineup for director Kim Han-min’s action period piece and signaling the start of a grand journey, the film ‘Sword: Godumakhan’s Sword’ is produced by Big Stone Pictures and Bluefire Studio and will enter full-scale production aiming for a summer 2027 release.
