Now in its third year, the ‘Esports World Cup’ (EWC) in Saudi Arabia has surpassed $75 million (about 110 billion KRW) in total prize money.
The Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), which organizes the EWC, held an online press briefing on the 19th (KST) and announced that this year the event will be held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 6 to August 23.
There will be 24 titles in total, with ‘Fortnite’ and ‘Trackmania’ newly added this year.
Run in a club-versus-club format, this year’s EWC will award a total of $30 million (about 44 billion KRW) to the top 24 clubs. The champion club will receive $7 million, and prize distribution will extend across the rest of the top placements.
Each individual game championship has its own prize pool by title, and their combined total exceeds $39 million. The remaining funds will be distributed through awards for clubs and players.
Ralf Reichert, CEO of the EWCF, said, “The prize money for this event has been designed to provide tangible support not only to the players at the heart of esports but also to the clubs that have invested every year in developing talent,” adding, “Unlike producing separate champions in individual titles, the EWC is differentiated in that it crowns a ‘club champion’ through a club championship that aggregates results across multiple titles.”
Tickets for the EWC will go on sale on the 22nd via the official website, and can also be purchased through international ticketing partners.
According to the EWCF, last year the EWC amassed 350 million cumulative hours watched by 750 million viewers worldwide, and 3 million people visited the venue in Riyadh over seven weeks.
