Five airlines under Hanjin Group, including Korean Air, will impose a complete ban on the use of portable batteries on board starting on the 26th.

Under the revised policy, using portable batteries to charge electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, laptops, and cameras is prohibited on board all domestic and international flights operated by Korean Air, Asiana Airlines, Jin Air, Air Busan, and Air Seoul.

Passengers must comply with the capacity·quantity limits for portable batteries specified in the cabin carry-on regulations. Before boarding, they are also required to take short-circuit prevention measures, such as attaching insulating tape to battery terminals or storing each battery separately in a plastic bag·individual pouch. Charging·using portable batteries on board is strictly prohibited, and only carrying them is permitted.

After bringing portable batteries on board, passengers must keep them within reach by carrying them themselves or storing them in the seat pocket or under the seat in front. Storing portable batteries in overhead bins is also prohibited, because a delayed initial response to abnormal signs could develop into a serious accident.

The five Hanjin Group airlines including Korean Air plan to inform customers of the relevant rules through their official websites and mobile apps, notices at airport check-in counters, and alert messages. They also intend to make continuous announcements at boarding gates and on board to minimize confusion.

A Korean Air official stated, “This complete ban on the use of portable batteries on board is an unavoidable measure to ensure safe flight operations, so the cooperation of passengers is essential,” and added, “All airlines under Hanjin Group will do their utmost to ensure safe and comfortable travel for customers.”
