The prison term for a man in his 30s who stole valuables worth tens of millions of won from broadcaster Park Na-rae’s home has been upheld.
According to Yonhap News on the 5th, the Criminal Appellate Division 2-1 of the Seoul Western District Court (Presiding Judge Jeong Seong-gyun) sentenced Mr. A (38), indicted on charges of theft and nighttime residential trespass, to two years in prison, the same as the first trial.
The court said, “The offense was committed during a suspended sentence period, and considering that there is no particular change in circumstances compared with the first instance, it is difficult to view the original sentence as outside a reasonable range.”
In April last year, Mr. A was brought to trial on charges of breaking into Park Na-rae’s home in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, stealing valuables worth tens of millions of won, and fleeing. He also attempted to sell the stolen items as stolen goods.
During the appellate proceedings, Mr. A pleaded for leniency, saying, “Park Na-rae refused a settlement,” but Park maintained a hardline stance.
Earlier, in September last year, the first-instance court sentenced him to two years in prison, stating that “the defendant acknowledges the charges and returned money and goods to the victim,” while noting his prior convictions for similar offenses and the high value of the items.
