The damages lawsuit against singer Sukhaeng as an alleged paramour, filed after allegations of an affair with a married man led her to suspend her activities, will hold its first hearing in April.
According to a Star News report on the 3rd, the single-judge Civil Division 7 at the Seongnam branch of the Suwon District Court plans to hold the first hearing in April in the damages suit filed by Ms. A, a housewife in her 40s, against Sukhaeng.
The complaint was filed last September, and because Sukhaeng’s side did not submit an answer for some time, there was even a possibility that a judgment would be rendered without argument. In fact, a date for pronouncement of judgment was set once, but after Sukhaeng’s side belatedly appointed a legal representative and submitted a power of attorney, the pronouncement was canceled and the case entered formal proceedings.
The controversy surfaced in December last year through JTBC ‘Sageon Banjang’. The broadcast dealt with allegations of an affair between a famous female trot singer and a married man, and Sukhaeng was identified as the person involved. CCTV footage released at the time showed a woman presumed to be Sukhaeng and Ms. A’s husband hugging and kissing.
Ms. A filed suit, claiming that while they have two children, her husband left home because of the affair and lived with Sukhaeng.
As the controversy grew, Sukhaeng posted a handwritten letter on social media, apologizing, “I am sorry for causing concern due to a recent personal matter.” She continued, “I was told by the other party that the marriage was already irreparably broken and that they were separated with divorce in mind. Believing this, I began dating, but after realizing that divorce had not been agreed upon, I ended the relationship.” She added, “I will clarify all the facts through legal procedures,” and stepped down from the television programs in which she had been appearing.
Mr. B, Ms. A’s husband, also appeared on a YouTube channel to state his position. Introducing himself as a businessman born in 1979, he asserted, “Sukhaeng is the victim,” and “I was the one who said we were separated with divorce in mind and that all procedures had been settled.” He also said, “All responsibility lies with me. If financial damages arise, I will accept them.”
With the two sides’ claims in sharp conflict, attention is focused on how the facts will be addressed at the first hearing in April.
