KBS2 ‘Duet Across the Sea’
In the global music project ‘Duet Across the Sea’, national diva Park Ki-young takes on a guerrilla concert in the Netherlands. However, an unusual tension with Dutch artist Wouter Hamel hints at a looming crisis.
Airing on the 5th on KBS2 ‘Duet Across the Sea’, Park Ki-young and Wouter Hamel, who are attempting a musical collaboration through a guerrilla concert, visit a rehearsal studio to prepare for the show. The two are given a mission: ‘Within a limited 100 hours, they must gather 300 audience members and put on a performance.’ To draw 300 people, Park Ki-young and Miki Kwang-suXJo Maeryeok threw themselves into promotion the moment they arrived in the Netherlands, jumping into everything from street busking to restaurant part-time work before even adjusting to the time difference.
As the performance draws near, Park Ki-young and Wouter Hamel begin full-fledged practice by meeting the band that performs with Wouter Hamel. Wouter Hamel brought his own translation of Park Ki-young’s song, and the two sang in English to find their groove. Though Wouter Hamel gave his all, original artist Park Ki-young showed signs of discomfort. With things seeming out of sync from the very first run-through, Park Ki-young eventually said, “I think we need to tidy up our lyrics,” and stopped the rehearsal. In response, Wouter Hamel wore an expression not seen since filming began and pushed back, saying, “It’s hard to explain, but our band doesn’t like it.” He was even caught on camera halting the shoot and walking out.
‘PR fairy’ Miki Kwang-su allowed for the possibility of failure, saying, “Even failing is all part of it…” Even the usually cheerful Jo Maeryeok fell silent at the grave mood, remarking, “In the middle, Ki-young and Wouter Hamel… that’s when I got a little worried. It won’t all go smoothly. The two of them are the problem.”
With Park Ki-young&Wouter Hamel clashing over musical differences right before the show, curiosity mounts over whether they can safely gather 300 attendees and raise the curtain. Appearing on ‘Morning Yard’ on the 3rd, Park Ki-young showcased tremendous live vocals even in the early morning, heightening expectations for what kind of performance she will present on ‘Duet Across the Sea’.
