Singer Soyou, formerly of the group Sistar, opened up about her candid thoughts on marriage and childbirth.
On the 10th, the YouTube channel ‘Alddalddal Hanchamgyeon’ released a video titled ‘Started meddling… got countered by Soyou | Alddalcham EP.8’. That day, Soyou appeared as a guest on the drinking talk show hosted by Ahn Jae-hyun, Heo Kyung-hwan, and Muzie and discussed various topics.
When Muzie asked how she had been, Soyou laughed and said, “Me, a really boring life?” When Ahn Jae-hyun asked, “Why? Because of marriage?” Soyou waved it off, replying, “No.”
When Soyou revealed she is 35 this year, Heo Kyung-hwan said, “As an older brother, I oppose the idea of you gradually giving up on marriage at 35,” adding, “You’re so beautiful, and 35 was when I was happiest. I thought everything was perfect. A woman’s age and all that isn’t necessary.” He then joked, “Honestly, you lift more on the bench press than I do,” drawing laughter.

Soyou also spoke candidly about her thoughts on marriage. She said, “Originally, my life goal wasn’t to become a top star as a singer or Korea’s Beyonc, but a devoted wife and wise mother.” She continued, “Since I was young, my dream was to build a happy family. I thought it would be nice to have a life where the house smells of soybean paste stew when the family comes home from work, and I do housework and take care of the children.”
However, she said her thoughts changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Soyou said, “Watching little kids say, ‘I don’t have a mask,’ made me think I didn’t want to have a child in a world like this.”
She added, “I originally wanted to have kids early, so around thirty I tried to get my body in the best health to freeze my eggs. But I found out it doesn’t end in one goyou have to keep getting injections in the abdomen. I have a really severe needle phobia, so I thought, ‘I can’t do this.’”

She went on, “I started thinking, if I’m not going to have children, do I really need to get married? Once the idea of having kids went away, the thought of marriage naturally faded too.”
When Heo Kyung-hwan said, “I’ve seen plenty of people, men and women alike, who say things like this and then suddenly get married,” Soyou explained, “It’s not that I don’t want to get married; I just don’t have any particular thoughts about it,” adding, “I don’t want to chase marriage for its own sake.”
Asked whether she is dating, she said, “I’ve been dating for a while. It hasn’t been more than five years. I’ll stop there.”
