Singer Soyou revealed that she spent her childhood as a recipient of basic livelihood benefits.

On the 10th, the YouTube channel ‘Alttalttalhan Chamgyeon’ released a video titled ‘Started meddling… got countered by Soyou | Alttalcham EP.8’. In the video, Soyou appeared as a guest on a drinking talk show hosted by Ahn Jae-hyun, Heo Kyung-hwan, and Muzie.

That day’s broadcast unveiled Soyou’s ‘life graph’. Seeing the graph, Ahn Jae-hyun drew attention by saying, “I’ve never seen a graph that’s all negative up to age 20.” Soyou’s graph traced a negative curve from moving to Seoul at age eight to her debut with Sistar at 20.

Soyou recalled, “My family really had a hard time. I was also a recipient of basic livelihood benefits,” adding, “At the hospital it was always 1,500 won, and at the pharmacy it was always 500 won.”

She continued, “While we were struggling, our home was burglarized when I was in middle school,” surprising everyone by saying, “That was because of me.” She explained, “I often climbed in through the window because I frequently lost my keys and was afraid my mom would scold me,” and “According to the police and the National Forensic Service, it was possible the burglar was someone who had seen me climb in through the window.”

She also confessed that in Sistar’s early days she worried a lot about her lack of presence. Soyou said, “When people thought of Sistar, Hyolyn, Bora, and Dasom came to mind; I thought I was a member without presence,” adding, “I had a lot of worries about what I should do.”

She said the collaboration on Geeks’ ‘Officially Missing You, Too’ became a turning point in her life. Soyou recalled, “The day before, at the Idol Star Athletics Championships, I had shouted so much during the strongman contest that my voice could hardly come out,” adding, “I even said, ‘Let’s call this off.’”

She went on, “They originally wanted a clear, high voice, but I asked if I could have some hot broth first,” adding, “My voice wouldn’t come out, so I constricted my vocal cords and sang, and I got feedback like, ‘It sounds like a little Black kid. That’s so good.’”

Soyou added, “From then on, my voice opened up and the recording went well, and afterward I started receiving many collaboration offers.”
