MC Ding Dong (Heo Yong-woon), who had been on a hiatus for self-reflection due to a drunk driving controversy, was found to have assaulted a female BJ during an online broadcast.
During a recent Excel broadcast (a program that ranks viewer donation amounts), an incident occurred in which MC Ding Dong assaulted a female BJ.
According to the video, a female BJ hurled harsh profanity at MC Ding Dong, saying “You have been in the business a long time but have done nothing ○○” and “The one with the incident two years ago (drunk driving) ○○”. Enraged, MC Ding Dong shouted “Put the camera away” and grabbed the female BJ by the hair.
After the outburst, MC Ding Dong sat back down and blamed his behavior on his past crime. He said, “I apologize to the viewers and the BJ,” but added, “I can take other insults, but the moment I heard ‘the incident two years ago,’ I have my own trauma and thought of my children, so I snapped,” as he cried.
After apologizing, MC Ding Dong even broke into a dance when a viewer sent a donation. Having been in tears apologizing just moments before, he immediately stood up and, together with another participant, chanted the viewer ID.
This is interpreted as a scene that plainly illustrates the moral hazard of the so-called ‘Excel broadcast’, which drives donation competition for profit. Even on platforms that lie in the regulatory blind spot of the Korea Communications Standards Commission, it is being consumed as a stimulant that induces donations through extreme vilification and violence among participants.
Online opinion is also icy. Comments such as “You committed a crime yourself, so what kind of trauma excuse is that?” and “Assault someone and then dance when money comes in, the sight is precisely that of an online entertainment parlor” are pouring in.
In February 2022, while heavily intoxicated, MC Ding Dong drove under the influence, refused a police order to stop and fled, then rammed a police vehicle; he has a prior record of being sentenced to one year and six months in prison, suspended for two years, on these charges.
Due to this controversy, past cases in which he was sued on charges of assault and insult are also being ‘exhumed’.
