Actor Han Ji-eun unveiled a fierce transformation of a completely different tenor through the stage production ‘THE WASP(Wasp)’.
In ‘THE WASP’, which opened on the 10th at Sejong S Theater, Han Ji-eun played ‘Heather’, who seems to live an elegant and perfect life on the surface yet is stained inside by trauma, delivering unrelenting tension and immersion throughout the performance.
‘THE WASP’ is a two-hander about two former classmates, Heather and Carla, reuniting after 20 years. A psychological thriller that probes how trauma deeply rooted within and social class disparities can destroy people, it premiered in 2015 at Hampstead Theatre in London and received praise. This production drew great anticipation as the Korean premiere.
As Heather, Han Ji-eun led the unbroken 90-minute performance with stability and density, elevating the tension of the play. By delicately expressing the complex psychology of Heather, who has lived on with scars left by school days violence and trauma, she made audiences completely forget the bright and bubbly image they had known.

In the play, after reuniting with Carla, a classmate who has lived a different life for 20 years, Heather proposes a dangerous deal. Between the two, suffocating conversations and seamless interplay unfolded, and as shocking incidents from the past rose to the surface, a taut psychological game developed. In the explosive latter part, Han Ji-eun drew in fine detail the inner life of Heather that changes at every moment where past memories and present emotions intersect, firmly steering the tension and flow of the piece.
While maintaining unshakable elegance on the surface, she delicately revealed the anxiety and anger hidden beneath, convincingly bringing out the duality of the character. By using details down to removing her shoes, letting down her hair, and applying lipstick, she made the fissures of the character and the waves of emotion stand out more clearly. Her compelling performance, which prompted questions about goodness and violence, was more than enough to draw admiration from the audience.
With fine details in the tone and tempo of lines, facial expressions, gestures, and trembling hands, Han Ji-eun made ‘Heather’ distinctly her own. By vividly unfolding instinctive choices and emotional shifts under extreme circumstances, she left the audience with a long-lasting afterglow.
Having shown wide-ranging acting in a variety of works, including the dramas ‘Study Group’, ‘Ask the Stars’, the film ‘Hitman 2’, and the plays ‘Anna X’ and ‘White Rabbit Red Rabbit’, Han Ji-eun presented a completely different, unfamiliar face and intense atmosphere in this work, leaving a strong impression on audiences.
