Ahead of its re-release this May, ‘A City of Sadness’ brings back Tony Leung’s earlier years to the screen.
The importer-distributor D-Station announced on the 8th that it has released 14 press stills for ‘A City of Sadness’, directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien and starring Tony Leung, and confirmed a nationwide theatrical release in May. ‘A City of Sadness’ portrays the tragedy of a family set against a turbulent Taiwan immediately after emerging from Japanese colonial rule.
The released stills show characters dreaming of new lives, along with Tony Leung in his twenties. They include a scene in which the deaf and mute photographer ‘Mun-cheong’ (Tony Leung) exchanges written notes with a friend, and a scene in which the nurse ‘Gwan-mi’ writes in her diary. Cuts that capture the foggy landscapes of Jiufen alongside the silhouettes of the characters were also unveiled.

According to the importer, Tony Leung has said in the past that, during the filming of ‘A City of Sadness’, he was shocked by the realistic presence shown by the non-professional actors on set, and that this experience prompted him to start reflecting on acting.
‘A City of Sadness’ will be screened from digitized original film elements. The cast includes Tony Leung, Jin Song-yong, and Shin Su-bun, among others, and it opens in theaters nationwide in May.
