BTS unveiled a new music video distinguished by overwhelming, large-scale group choreography.
On the 8th, on HYBE Labels’ YouTube channel, BTS released the music video for ‘Hooligan,’ a track from their fifth studio album ‘Arirang’ (ARIRANG). With a different kind of explosive energy than the earlier ‘SWIM’ and ‘2.0’ music videos, it grabs attention. The seven members’ performance, in sync with a large ensemble of dancers, is the showstopper.
Jin appears amid a mysterious hush and puts on a black mask. As if his action were a signal, dozens of dancers soon converge and launch into explosive group choreography. Hedonistic festival scenes overflowing with food and drink provide lavish visual pleasure. Intercut black-and-white shots capture each member’s aura with a razor-edged sensibility. The video amplifies the space’s strangeness by using red as the key color. The dancers’ red costumes bursting through a moss-covered gray building collide with the chill texture of the setting, leaving a strong impression. Figures and objects seemingly frozen midair, as if defying gravity throughout the footage, create a surreal atmosphere and elevate the video’s artistry.
The performance of ‘Hooligan’ showcases the pinnacle of the craft BTS has built over the years. Meticulous yet explosive group choreography delivers visual exhilaration, while the members’ uninhibited gestures add to the viewing pleasure. The energy radiated by the large troupe filling the expansive architecture and the intense red set metaphorically express the song’s message about the team’s bold journey. The members also expressed satisfaction with the work. Through their agency BigHit Music, they shared, “We were immersed in the shoot for the first time in a while because the rugged styling and the atmosphere emanating from each scene looked so cool.” In this video, BTS flawlessly pulls off stylish looks such as black outerwear with ornate details, sunglasses, and tooth gems.
The ‘Hooligan’ music video was directed by Hannah Lux Davis, who has worked with global pop stars including Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, and Anne-Marie.
‘Hooligan’ is an alternative hip hop track that chronicles BTS’s journey as they have roamed the world and forged their own path. The opening, layering razor-edged blade sounds over opulent strings, leaves a strong impression. The distinctive rhythm built from clashing blades combined with a deep, low 808 bass creates a fresh atmosphere. The contrast between gritty rap and sweet melody paints an image of striding through the world with ease and confidence.
