Built recognition by parodying Im Seong-han’s works
The original author personally chose the parody creator

Star writer Im Seong-han, who had not appeared in public for 36 years since debut, chose as a first channel of communication not legacy media but a YouTuber who lampooned their works. Attention is focused on the fact that a reclusive author who has avoided media exposure has joined hands directly with a creator who grew by imitating them.
On the 7th, YouTuber Eom Eun-hyang wrote on social media (SNS), “Writer Im Seong-han contacted me first,” adding, “Im will appear as a guest on next week’s live broadcast.”
Eom Eun-hyang has built recognition primarily by parodying Im Seong-han’s past signature works such as ‘Mermaid Lady’, ‘Princess Aurora’, and ‘Dear Heaven’. By reworking the characteristics of the so-called ‘Im Seong-han World’ (plot developments, shamanistic motifs, and distinctive lyric rewrites) into comedy, Eom won support from younger audiences.
It is interpreted that this background likely played a role in Im Seong-han appearing on Eom Eun-hyang’s channel rather than on terrestrial talk shows. Compared with the customary response of original authors expressing displeasure or raising copyright issues over creations that make fun of controversial settings or lines from their works, this is an exceptional decision.
Eom Eun-hyang has also presented as a fan, revealing across multiple pieces of content that attending an Im Seong-han audition is on a bucket list. Recently, Eom showcased content parodying Im-style acting together with actors who appeared in Im Seong-han’s drama ‘Doctor Shin’.
Whether Im Seong-han’s mystique will be broken is of interest to the industry and the public. Although Im debuted in 1990 with the KBS one-act drama ‘Standing in the Maze’ and wrote numerous mega-hits, there has never been an appearance for media interviews or at official events.
The seclusion has been so thorough that even the photos available online amount to no more than one or two blurry ID-style shots from the past. An appearance by Im Seong-han on Eom Eun-hyang’s YouTube channel would break 36 years of seclusion.
If the appearance is finalized, it is expected to stand as a case of an original author actively embracing today’s media ecosystem, which has been reorganized around short form and YouTube. The move is seen as a contrarian approach that embraces even parodies aimed at oneself as a ‘meme’ (Meme) and, for the creator, completes the ‘seongdeok’ (successful fan) narrative, thereby securing a point of contact with younger generations.
