The son of actor Youn Yuh-jung, Niel Cho, appeared on a broadcast.
Sam Richards (Sam Richards), a sociology professor at Pennsylvania State University and a popular YouTuber, met Niel Cho (Niel Cho, Jo Neul), the son of actor Youn Yuh-jung and a hip-hop consultant, on the 9th in the heart of LA Koreatown.
Professor Sam Richards began by calling Niel Cho “one of the most fascinating third-culture people I have met.” In response, Niel Cho introduced himself as “a Korean expatriate living in the United States who grew up in Korea attending an international school and came to the United States, the ‘homeland,’ for college, where I became an adult.” Saying he moved to LA 8 to 9 years ago, Niel Cho also said, “I realized I am closer to an American-Korean than a Korean-American.”

During the interview, Professor Sam Richards revealed an interesting anecdote from the night before. When Niel Cho said his mother is a famous actor, he asked to see a photo, and it turned out that the person was actor Youn Yuh-jung, who had won an Oscar. Richards said, “I looked at the photo and said, ‘Wait a second! Was this your mother?’ Then you did something very characteristically Koreanrather than boasting, you showed humility.” In response, Niel Cho smiled and said, “Korea is such a humble culture.” He went on, “My mother is a very famous and respected actor, and an Oscar winner. I am very proud of that,” showing deep affection for his mother, Youn Yuh-jung.
On the definition of the ‘third culture,’ Niel Cho said, “It is a blend of two cultures,” and added, “My DNA is Korean, but I grew up in the country of Korea while receiving an American-style education. Korean and American cultures coexist within me, but above all, the culture of ‘hip-hop’ flows within me, and I believe it is a beautiful element that completes me.”
