MBC ‘21st-Century Grand Consort’ broadcast capture

Gong Seung-yeon of ‘21st-Century Grand Consort’ drove an overwhelming sense of tension, heralding the outset of a royal confrontation.

The new MBC FridaySaturday drama ‘21st-Century Grand Consort’ (directed by Park Joon-hwa, written by Yoo Ji-won), which premiered on the 10th, is set in a 21st-century constitutional monarchy in the Republic of Korea and portrays a status-defying romance between a woman who has everything as a chaebol yet resents her commoner status and a man who, though a son of the king, can possess nothing, as they strive to carve out their destinies. Gong Seung-yeon takes the role of Queen Dowager Yoon I-rang and, from her very first appearance, clashes with Grand Prince Lee An (played by Byeon Woo-seok), who threatens the throne of her son, Lee Yun. She renders her desperation with layered, focused detail, heightening immersion throughout the episode.

At the birthday banquet for her son, Lee Yun, Yoon I-rang (played by Gong Seung-yeon) reprimanded Grand Prince Lee An for arriving late and for his discourteous demeanor, revealing her displeasure. However, as all eyes turned to Grand Prince Lee An upon his arrival, Yoon I-rang felt both intimidation and chagrin, while her sense of crisis deepened that the royal authority of Lee Yun was being shaken. When another fire broke out, recalling the incident in which her husband lost his life, she suspected Grand Prince Lee An, slapped him, and released her pent-up emotions. With public support and attention concentrating on Grand Prince Lee An, and under the current power structure in which her son Lee Yun is under his regency, she reacted sensitively to his every move and ultimately even forced his marriage, igniting conflict.

As Yoon I-rang, Gong Seung-yeon revealed the majesty of a queen dowager who embodies royal decorum through a steady vocal tone and calm delivery, adding depth to the drama with restrained eyes and firm projection. At the same time, she subtly captured the anxiety and impatience felt before cracks in authority through minute shifts in expression, sustaining tension and bolstering the credibility of the character. Above all, Gong Seung-yeon, fully reborn as Queen Dowager Yoon I-rang, lent weight to the fantasy narrative that fuses elements of period and contemporary drama, leaving a strong impression from the first episode as a symbolic royal presence that is both neat and dignified.

Following the broadcast, praise continued for Gong Seung-yeon, both for her portrayal of the complex emotional arc of Yoon I-rang and for her distinctive visuals, and expectations are rising for the story of Yoon I-rang and the changes to come.
