MBN ‘Nameless Legends - Trot Men's Ranking War’
As MBN’s blockbuster audition show ‘Nameless Legends - Trot Men's Ranking War’ (hereafter ‘Nameless Legends’) carries its heat forward with ‘Untold Stories’, it has proven its buzz by asserting a presence on music charts beyond the broadcast itself.
With the release at noon on the 9th of the ‘Nameless Legends 1-on-1 Death Match PART.2’ tracks, Yoo Ji-Woo’s ‘To the One I Am Grateful To’ ranked 8th, Seongri’s ‘Casablanca’ ranked 10th, and Marcus Kang’s ‘Wings’ ranked 41st on Kakao Music’s real-time TOP100 chart. In Melon’s genre charts, Kim Han-Yul’s ‘The Love That Keeps Me Alive’ placed 40th, and Yoo Ji-Woo’s ‘To the One I Am Grateful To’ placed 77th. Tracks released immediately after the broadcast settled onto the charts right away, once again demonstrating viewers’ instantaneous response and the program’s strong pull.
Despite being formerly unknown challengers, Yoo Ji-Woo and Marcus Kang went head-to-head with top artists who traditionally dominate music chartssuch as K-pop idols and powerhouse balladeersand ended up standing shoulder to shoulder, which makes the achievement all the more notable. This suggests that ‘Nameless Legends’ is fostering a real fandom beyond simple ratings metrics.
Additionally, ‘Nameless Legends’ has maintained first place among Wednesday variety shows, as well as No. 1 across all channels in the same time slot and among general programming cable networks, for seven consecutive weeks since its premiere. It is also sweeping real-time portal trends and Melon’s popular searches, and cumulative views on social media have surpassed 92 million. On top of that, contestants’ fandoms are keeping the heat alive with outdoor banner support.
Riding this momentum, from the 3rd through the 17th, every Friday at 10:50 p.m., the show is extending its emotion and afterglow with ‘Nameless Legends: Untold Stories’, which showcases performances that were not aired in the main broadcast. In the episode on the 10th, stages by Lee Sung-Geol, Marcus Kang, Jeon Bu-Seong, Lee Do-Jin, and Ryu Philip unfolded, delivering another wave of emotion along with a deep lingering resonance.
In particular, the Round 1 main-stage performances by Marcus Kang and Lee Do-Jinwho advanced directly to Round 3 of the main competition after winning Round 2’s ‘1-on-1 Death Match’drew attention. Marcus Kang, the son of singer Woo-Yeon and formerly a chef in the United States, revealed his motivation, saying, “I came here because I want to be a trot singer now, not Woo-Yeon’s son.”
Taking the stage in the ‘Fame Selection Round’, Lee Do-Jin said, “I really wanted to sing. That is why I am so happy to be standing on this stage,” and confessed, “I developed vocal cord nodules and hearing loss. I had no choice but to spend a long silence at home. What hurt the most was seeing myself have to put my dream on hold.”
Marcus Kang captivated attention not only with a flashy cocktail show performance, but also with a low register and expressive facial acting that pierced female viewers’ hearts. An eighth-year active singer, Lee Do-Jin drew admiration with an absorbing stage. Fully bringing out the flavor of traditional trot, he unleashed solid yet refreshing high notes with overwhelming emotion, sending chills through the venue.
‘Nameless Legends’ is now officially launching the Round 3 main event, the ‘National Song Showdown’. With tickets to the semifinals on the line, the competition will grow fiercer and the contestants’ energy will burn even hotter. Round 3, the ‘National Song Showdown’, can be seen on MBN at 9:40 p.m. on the 15th.
