Play ‘Sora Star Story’
The creative collective ‘Geogigamyeon’ will grace the April 2026 stage with the steady-selling mask play ‘Sora Star Story’, which has been performed consistently and earned audience praise since its 2011 premiere. This run marks the 15th anniversary of ‘Sora Star Story’, and audience anticipation for the proven mask play is high.
Led by Chung-Ang University professor Baek Nam-young, ‘Geogigamyeon’ will present ‘Sora Star Story’ from Tue (April 21) to Sun (May 3): Tuesday to Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday to Sunday at 3:00 p.m., at Hyehwa Theater Kkum in Seoul. In addition, at 4:00 p.m. on Sat (April 18), ahead of the Seoul performances, ‘Sora Star Story’ is scheduled at the Grand Theater of the Yeju Culture and Arts Center in Yeongdeok, North Gyeongsang, so even more audiences are expected to encounter its moving impact.
Even those unfamiliar with masks or mask theater can enjoy ‘Geogigamyeon’’s signature work ‘Sora Star Story’, whose stage has also produced many outstanding stars. Many actors who are now active across stage and screen, including Kang Han-na, Park Jeong-won, Kim Gi-taek, Lee Do-hyun (birth name Lim Dong-hyun), Noh Jae-won, and Ahn Young-bin, have helped create this piece together.
Using half masks that perfectly capture each character’s traits, designed by troupe representative and mask designer Lee Su-eun, the actors transform into children, a foul-mouthed grandfather, a water spirit, and more, delivering the work’s unique charms. In addition, the modest stories and pure messages hidden within the masks leave a deep, lasting resonance with audiences. The 2026 cast of ‘Sora Star Story’ includes Song Young-hoon, Hong Sang-pyo, Choi Jeong-heon, Lee Kyung-eun, Choi Kyung-cheol, Kim Jae-min, Eom Hye-rin, Kim Tae-gyun, and Lee So-ri.
Play ‘Sora Star Story’
‘Sora Star Story’ was officially invited to the 2012 Folkwang Physical Theatre Festival in Germany, where it received enthusiastic reviews. It was also highly recognized at home and abroad, winning the Best Production (Fringe) at the 12th Pohang Sea International Performing Arts Festival, and Best Production, Best Director, and Best Actor at the 2013 Gimcheon International Family Theater Festival.
In 2025, at the 35th Geochang International Theater Festival, the mask play ‘Twelfth Night’ won the Grand Prize, Best Director, and Best Actor, once again showcasing the strength of mask theater.
Embodying warm sensibilities in Korean-style costumes and music, ‘Sora Star Story’ is like a ‘time machine’ that takes adults back to the innocence of childhood. Embracing all generations, it becomes a ‘letter of memories’ for older audiences, and for children it approaches like a ‘romantic fairy tale’ filled with pure feeling and charming, lovable characters.
The creative collective ‘Geogigamyeon’ has pioneered the genre of ‘mask theater’, which uses masks as the primary object, and since its founding in 2008 has consistently developed high-quality works. The many faces presented through diverse masks have become a new stage language that only ‘Geogigamyeon’ can offer.
