‘Dandy’ Koo Sung-hwan has arrived~.
An actor who moves across genres, Koo Sung-hwan. Sometimes a fierce villain, sometimes a guileless figure, he crosses film and television and returns each time with a different face. His new pictorial has now been unveiled.
With delicate facial acting and gestures that overpowered the set, he revealed a weighty presence like a scene from a classic film, then quickly transformed into a face with a unique aura, creating the atmosphere of a movie poster.
On set for the photo shoot, he said, “Unlike acting, you have to express everything with movement halted, so it is not easy, but the process itself is fun,” wearing an affable smile. It was a moment that clearly showed the side of him remembered by the public as ‘someone who knows how to enjoy the moment’.
Choosing ‘romance’ as the one word to describe himself, he added, “I think it is important to live enjoying each day.” Parting with his mother at a young age made him realize the value of ‘today’ and gave him a new philosophy and stance toward life.

This attitude carries over to acting sets as is. To immerse himself in a role, Koo Sung-hwan focuses on reading the overall flow and on ‘relaxing’ himself. “Rather than memorizing and analyzing lines, I look a lot at the big flow. Believing that breathing between actors is important, I try to match the ensemble. When the body becomes rigid, expression does not come out well, so I think ‘comfort’ is fundamental,” his answers conveyed the presence of a veteran who has steadily built his craft over a long time.
Even amid the hot attention pouring in through variety shows recently, he is striving to keep his center as an actor. “I want to distinguish clearly between variety and acting. If I appear only as a variety persona, it could be a nuisance to the colleagues with whom I make projects,” he said, revealing a deep professional consciousness that surveys the work as a whole.
His passion for acting also points toward new characters. Having learned through experience that the fewer expressions he shows when portraying a real person, the more intense it can become, he expressed a wish to take on Janus-like characters that lead the drama with only lines or glances, and roles that keep delivering reversals.
Also, the single line from actor Song Kang-ho, whom he had liked since childhood “I knew you would become a good actor” remains an unforgettable encouragement to this day. Recalling their connection on ‘Uncle Samsik’, he is waiting for the day they can work together again over a longer span.
From ‘Reverse’, which moves between noir and comedy, to ‘Okay, Let Us Divorce’, which offers emotion drawn from everyday life, and ‘H-512 (working title)’ filmed in Kazakhstan, the projects queued up across genres stand as indicators that prove his diligence and acting spectrum.
His ultimate goal is not a grand achievement but ‘to live more enjoyably’. He said, “Happiness is not as grand as one might think. A delicious dinner after work, a home where you can fall asleep comfortably perhaps the things embedded in daily life are happiness,” and added, “Many people ask about happiness; do not think of it as difficult. Be grateful for the small things and feel the little happinesses,” offering gentle comfort.
