Actor Kang Ha-gyeong embarks on a transformation, playing Corporal Kim Gwan-cheol, the power at Gangnim Outpost, in the TVING original ‘Becoming a Legend as a Military Cook’
On the 7th, agency FN Entertainment said, “Actor Kang Ha-gyeong will appear as Kim Gwan-cheol in the TVING original ‘Becoming a Legend as a Military Cook’.”
Kang Ha-gyeong said, “‘Kim Gwan-cheol’ was a character that came across with great intensity from the very first time I read the script. Because he seemed like someone who could really exist somewhere in actual military life, I tried to portray him with greater realism. Please show a lot of anticipation and interest,” sharing his thoughts on joining the cast.
The TVING original ‘Becoming a Legend as a Military Cook’(written by Choi Ryong, directed by Cho Nam-hyeong, planned by Studio Dragon, produced by Studio Dragon and Studio N, provided by TVING(TVING)) is a military cooking-show fantasy drama that follows Private Kang Seong-jae (played by Park Ji-hoon), who trades a rifle for a kitchen knife and an apron for an ammo belt, as he becomes a ‘legendary military cook’.

In the drama, Kang Ha-gyeong plays Corporal Kim Gwan-cheol, the power at Gangnim Outpost and manager of the Second Living Quarters. Kim Gwan-cheol has a rough personality whose fists fly first whenever something displeases him, yet he also harbors a lonely inner life that longs for human connection more than anyone. He puts on a tough front, but after Kang Seong-jae arrives and the problems at Gangnim Outpost begin to surface one by one, the dissatisfaction of Kim Gwan-cheol steadily grows.
Kim Gwan-cheol forms a tense standoff with Sergeant Yoon Dong-hyeon (played by Lee Hong-nae), the ‘senior’ on the verge of discharge, adding both tension and fun to the story. Kang Ha-gyeong is expected to realistically capture the mood of the original character and portray, with density, the hierarchical culture unique to military life and the complex emotions of the character.
Kang Ha-gyeong has been steadily building a filmography, presenting distinctive characters across diverse projects including the dramas ‘Lovers’, ‘Fly, Dragon’, and ‘Dear Judge’, the films ‘HUMINT’ and ‘Streaming’, and the musical ‘Sisyphus’. Most recently, he has been focusing on preparations ahead of an appearance in the musical ‘The Brothers Karamazov’, continuing active work across both screen and stage. With a stable performance that reveals his presence in every project, anticipation is rising for what new side he will show in ‘Becoming a Legend as a Military Cook’.
The TVING original ‘Becoming a Legend as a Military Cook’ is based on the popular Naver webtoon of the same name, ‘Becoming a Legend as a Military Cook’ (written/drawn by J. Robin/Lee Jin-su), and will premiere on TVING and tvN at 8:50 p.m. on May 11.
