First, Jo U-nyeong, who plays the older brother ‘Zhihan’, said, “‘Zhihan’ is a person who experiences complex emotions and changes within his relationship with his younger brother. His younger brother was the only person who believed in him to the very end. I hope you will carefully watch how that relationship gradually turns into obsession,” pointing to the gradual distortion of the character’s inner emotions as a key viewing point.
Next, Ryu Su-bo, who plays the younger brother ‘Zijie’, added, “Although ‘Zijie’ is the only person who truly believes in his brother, that belief begins to waver. I hope you can deeply feel the tension and the moments of change that arise in their relationship,” selecting the evolving relationship between the inscrutable ‘Zhihan’ and the wavering ‘Zijie’, and the taut tension between belief and doubt, as core viewing points.
In her greeting video released alongside theirs, director Nelicia Low recalls visiting Seoul during her time on the national fencing team and forming friendships with Korean athletes, saying she is deeply moved to present the film to Korean audiences, which draws attention. She goes on to reveal that she drew inspiration for this work from her relationship with her older brother on the autism spectrum, adding, “What happens when the person we love is not the person we thought they were? That is the very heart of what ‘Pierce’ seeks to say,” further stoking curiosity about the film’s profound message.
The director also personally introduces the directorial devices hidden throughout the filmsuch as why she chose fencing as a central motif and the special aspect ratio set to express the characters’ psychological distancebuilding anticipation by emphasizing its appeal as a psychological suspense that, beyond a simple sports drama, delicately captures the fissures in relationships and the truth of emotions.
