SBS ‘Brave New World’
The humor is superb.
Actor Yoon Byung-Hee, through ‘Brave New World’, once again delivers a distinctive performance and keeps the drama engaging.
The SBS Friday-Saturday drama ‘Brave New World’ (directed by Han Tae-Seop, written by Kang Hyun-Joo, produced by Studio S·Gil Pictures), which premiered on the 8th, is a romantic comedy like a hair-trigger war between Shin Se-Ri (played by Lim Ji-Yeon), a no-name actor who becomes ‘vicious’ after being possessed by the soul of an infamous Joseon-era villainess, and Cha Se-Gye (played by Heo Nam-Jun), an evil chaebol called a monster born of capitalism. Yoon Byung-Hee plays Son Jae-Han, the chief of staff at BOJ, delivering a comic yet realistic performance.
As the reliable right hand of Cha Se-Gye, Son Jae-Han first appears as a perfect ‘pro handler’, fully equipped from task execution to keen perception. He showed competence by calmly organizing and reporting the response after Cha saw a deepfake video exposing his abuse of power. Before long, however, when Cha, unfazed and instead calling it good technology, issued a shockingly bold directive to acquire the company, Son revealed his bewilderment, and the scene drew laughter from viewers.
Son Jae-Han continued to provide zesty, scene-stealing moments. After a meeting, while moving with Cha Se-Gye and a foreign buyer, the buyer, who showed great interest in K-dramas, asked Cha whether in Korea you can easily start dating if you slap your boss. As Cha did not understand, Son showed sly wit by reciting a chaebol-romance cliche, “You are the first woman to talk down to me like this.” While he carried on in an excited voice, he quickly sensed a chilly reaction from Cha and his bravado faded, which further boosted the fun.
In this way, Yoon Byung-Hee, with polished acting, has greatly elevated the character appeal and is captivating viewers from the early stages of ‘Brave New World’. His well-placed humor creates delightful chemistry with Heo Nam-Jun and has earned praise. Attention is focused on what role he will continue to play as the story unfolds.
