In the JTBC drama ‘Everyone Is Fighting Against Their Worthlessness’, Go Youn-jung finally meets her birth mother, Bae Jong-ok.
JTBC ‘Everyone Is Fighting Against Their Worthlessness’(directed by Cha Young-hoon, written by Park Hae-young, produced by Studio Phoenix·SLL·Studio Flow, hereafter, ‘Mojamussa’) revealed that the very first person Byun Eun-ah (Go Youn-jung) ever marked with an X was her mother, Oh Jung-hee (Bae Jong-ok). After abandoning without hesitation a lackluster husband and child who did not satisfy her, then ‘swapping out’ her entire life for a more dazzling husband and child and achieving everything she wanted, this heartless mother engraved an indelible revulsion in Byun Eun-ah. As a result, whenever she feels the fear of abandonment, she is still fighting a trauma that takes her back to that moment when she was nine years old, stuck alone in an elementary school classroom.
In episode 8 airing today (the 9th), Byun Eun-ah confronts head on the past where this trauma began. To keep her glamorous national star image from being scratched, Oh Jung-hee embellishes the past with lies, and Byun Eun-ah is set to unleash at once the anger and frustration she has long suppressed. Plagued by nosebleeds whenever she is under extreme stress and by an ‘urge to self-destruct,’ expectations are rising over whether she can, through this encounter, rescue the self that was bound to that nine-year-old classroom.
The stills released in this regard capture intact the suffocating tension between Byun Eun-ah and Oh Jung-hee. Unlike the tender demeanor she showed in her Best Actress acceptance speech at an awards ceremony, Oh Jung-hee shows a cold expression with no hint of remorse in front of her daughter. Facing her, Byun Eun-ah also fixes an unyielding, piercing gaze on Oh Jung-hee. This suggests the deep chasm of emotion between mother and daughter. In addition, the ruthless value system with which Oh Jung-hee seeks to justify her life collides with the sharp ‘axe swings’ of Byun Eun-ah, who drives straight into that reality without mercy, sending the tension to its peak.
The production team said, “There is a reason why Byun Eun-ah, who had warned not to let their relationship be exposed and did not want a direct encounter, decided to meet Oh Jung-hee. At this meeting, she will once again show that ‘I am a quiet child, not an easy pushover’,” and added, “Please look forward to the change in Byun Eun-ah, who is refusing to remain in a bleak reality and, having gained the courage that it is worth the fight, is now pressing ahead with vigor.”
