TVING ‘Becoming a Legend as a Cook Soldier’
A ‘master of acting’ true to his name.
Actor Yoon Kyung-ho staged an intense feat of acting from his very first appearance in ‘Becoming a Legend as a Cook Soldier’.
Premiering on the 11th, the TVING original ‘Becoming a Legend as a Cook Soldier’ (written by Choi Ryong, directed by Cho Nam-hyeong, planned by Studio Dragon, produced by Studio Dragon and Studio N, provided by TVING (TVING)) is a military cooking fantasy drama that follows Private Kang Sung-jae (played by Park Ji-hoon), who takes up a kitchen knife instead of a rifle and an apron instead of an ammo belt, as he grows into a ‘legendary cook soldier’. Yoon Kyung-ho plays Park Jae-young, a long-serving master sergeant who is the administrative and supply NCO, firmly centering the story with grounded realism.
When Sung-jae, who arrived at Gangrim Outpost as the top trainee, was nodding off, Jae-young tossed out a barbed joke, leaving an extraordinary first impression: “My, kids these days sleep so soundly without a wobble, do they not.” Later, through the psychological test conducted before unit assignment, Jae-young discovers that Sung-jae, whom he had thought was the top trainee, is in fact a soldier of concern. Angered, he strongly protests to Master Sergeant Heo Ran-hee (played by Park So-ri), who is in charge of assignments, ratcheting up the tension.
In episode 2, Yoon Kyung-ho’s sly performance truly shone. Enchanted by the flavor of the bean sprout soup Sung-jae made, Jae-young is shown fighting an imagined battle clad in a trench coat and armed with dual pistols, delivering a historic comic scene. With emotions running high, he shouts, “Now this is the true victory of mess-hall fare, is it not,” and his fervent acting detonated a powerful laugh bomb for viewers.
In this way, Yoon Kyung-ho freely oscillated between old-school strictness and playfulness, doubling the drama’s fun. In particular, the way his tone shifts with circumstance, his flavorful dialect, and his expressions sharpened the character’s dimensionality. His weighty presence that commands the screen upon entry and his time-tested acting chops drew praise from viewers.
Immediately after the broadcast, viewers responded enthusiastically with comments such as “He looks like a completely different person. He acts so well,” “It is even more fun thanks to Master Sergeant Park Jae-young!”, “The acting detail is insane.
