TV CHOSUN ‘Perfect Life’
Hwang Hye-young, formerly of Two Two, reveals her battle with meningioma.
On TV CHOSUN ‘Perfect Life’ airing today (the 13th) at 8 p.m., Hwang Hye-young, from the popular 1990s co-ed group Two Two, shares a trove of stories from her heyday.
As the ‘original pocket girl’ Hwang Hye-young appeared, MC Hyun-young said, “A 1990s Jennie vibe,” and, with her trademark impassive face, belted out Two Two’s hit “One and a Half,” giving everyone a laugh. In response, Hwang said, “At our peak I had 11-12 schedules a day. Because there was travel time between gigs, we sometimes took helicopters and motorcycles,” adding, “When traffic was jammed during rush hour, we even took a boat on the Han River to make it to a schedule.”

Hearing this, comedian Lee Seong-mi asked, “Weren’t you incredibly popular even at military-base consolation shows?” Hwang recalled an unforgettable moment when their popularity was acknowledged: “We appeared on the military-base program ‘Stage of Friendship’; that day the ending act was Seo Taiji and Boys, and Two Two performed right before them. As Mr. Seo Taiji came down from the stage, he said, ‘We can’t beat you here.’”
Meanwhile, Hwang also shares that she once battled deteriorating health. “Back then, I was running an online store, had so much work that I couldn’t sleep, and lived in a state of sensitivity and tension from stress,” she says. “Living like that, in 2010 I was diagnosed with meningioma.” She confesses her feelings at the time: “After the diagnosis, I thought, ‘Why did I end up with this illness? I thought I had been living diligently...,’ and the emptiness and futility even led to depression.”
When Lee Seong-mi said, “Your husband must have been very shocked at the time,” Hwang responded, “That happened a month after my husband and I met. I said I wouldn’t even have surgery and would just let things go as they were, but my husband set the surgery date, got me admitted, and even nursed me,” moving everyone. Hwang added a heartfelt message of gratitude to her husband.
