The fact that Hwang Dong-man (Koo Kyo-hwan) is in debt has become known to his acquaintances. Can he cast off the baggage of his past (loan sharks, malicious comments) and complete his debut without incident?
In JTBC’s weekend drama ‘Everyone Is Fighting Their Worthlessness’ (directed by Cha Young-hoon, written by Park Hae-young, produced by Studio Phoenix·SLL·Studio Flow, hereinafter ‘Mojamussa’), Hwang Dong-man (Koo Kyo-hwan) turned to a loan shark to cover the sudden surgery costs for his companion cat ‘Yoreumi’. Since then, he has spent anxious days receiving debt-collection calls from the contact saved as ‘Collector’. If this were to come to light, he would inevitably face a crisis just as he approaches the life-changing turning point he has dreamed of for 20 years: his directorial debut.
In the released teaser video, a tense scene shows the loan shark, having realized that a source of money has opened up for Hwang, going to his home. On top of that, the loan shark sends a tell-all text message reading, “Hwang Dong-man borrowed $8,925 (11,900,000 KRW) of my money. If anyone has seen Hwang Dong-man, report it to this number immediately,” laying bare his disgrace to colleagues including Byun Eun-a (Go Youn-jung).
However, Hwang is set to show a firm spirit that no longer lingers in the past where he kept running away. In the released stills, unlike before when he was always busy dodging the loan shark’s calls, he walks into the enemy’s office on his own to face them. His eyes, staring straight at the loan shark, are filled with a steely resolve. He has begun to prove with actions his vow that “the goal is to become even a slightly less shameful person.” Rather than being buried in the shame of having his flaws exposed, Hwang’s choice to confront things head-on is expected to offer viewers a peculiar catharsis.
The production team said, “As Hwang Dong-man stands on the verge of his directorial debut, the seeds of the past he has carelessly scattered begin to return one by one as massive obstacles,” adding, “From the loan-shark issue to the sharp comments he left in the past and the expos post about Choi Film, the crux of this episode is how Hwang Dong-man will clean up his own faults that block his debut.” They continued, “Please watch and cheer on Hwang Dong-man’s reckless yet sincere steps as he refuses to turn away from the karma he created and faces it head-on to step onto the ‘ring of real combat’.”
