The Korean Peninsula is the battlefield··· unsettling!

The new installment in the globally popular shooter series ‘Call of Duty’ from Activision, ‘Modern Warfare 4’, draws attention by putting front and center a modern-warfare campaign set around the Korean Peninsula.

Among fans, reactions are mixed, including “Evidence that Korea and K-culture are drawing attention to the point that even a global game uses them as a setting” “A game is just a game” and “With tensions rising worldwide, it somehow feels unsettling to handle military conflict on the Korean Peninsula, which remains in a ceasefire.”

Activision confirmed the October 23 release of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’, developed by Infinity Ward.

A global military conflict triggered by a full-scale invasion by North Korea serves as the backdrop. In the campaign, the protagonist is ‘Private Park’ of the South Korean military, who carries out frontline combat. The series mainstay Captain Price also appears as a key figure and undertakes an independent operation to prevent a weapon capable of triggering a global catastrophe.

Players will experience diverse battles set across the world, including Korea, New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Activision explained that it captures a range of modern-warfare scenarios, from trench warfare and close-quarters urban combat to vehicle chases and special forces night operations.

The multiplayer mode has also been greatly enhanced. Alongside a more refined movement system, a new firearm system called ‘Ballistic Authority’ has been introduced to deliver a realistic shooting experience. At launch, it will offer 12 core maps spanning regions worldwide and newly unveil a dynamic battleground, ‘Kill Block’, where the layout is reconfigured into more than 500 variations between rounds.

The extraction-shooter mode ‘DMZ’ also returns. Players are deployed into combat zones that are configured with different conditions each time and carry out missions with survival and extraction as the objectives. The developer plans to reveal details related to DMZ on June 8.

‘Modern Warfare 4’ will be released on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, and for the first time in the series on the Nintendo Switch 2 platform.
