“Always think you have someone on your side”
Unfiltered family life unfolded on the small screen, spanning candid feelings about the controversies, living separately before marriage, and even remarks about having a child without marrying.
MBN’s ‘Someone Else’s Precious Family’ stamped its presence from the very first broadcast by capturing laughter, tears, and empathy all at once. From the sincere confessions of Shin Ji and Moon Won, to the down-to-earth romance of the couple Park Mi-sun and Lee Bong-won, to the cheerful tit-for-tat of Go Joon-hee’s family, family stories of different colors unfolded, announcing the birth of a ‘character haven’.
According to Nielsen Korea on the 3rd, the first episode of ‘Someone Else’s Precious Family’ (hereafter ‘Precious Family’), which aired on the 2nd, recorded a rating of 2.195% among all pay-TV households, with a minute peak of 2.72%, proving the high level of interest from viewers that had continued since before the premiere. By portraying without filters the everyday life where excitement and hurt, worry and comfort, conflict and love coexist, it unraveled down-to-earth family stories that anyone might have experienced at least once, forming empathy with viewers and getting off to a smooth start from the first broadcast, raising expectations for an upward trajectory.
The show first revealed the daily life of the couple Shin Ji and Moon Won a month before their wedding. As soon as they opened their eyes in the morning, they kissed and fed each other, serving up sweetness that would make viewers’ blood sugar spike. They also showed their small routines of cleaning and doing housework together, consistently displaying consideration for each other.
Their love story, after three years of secret dating, was also unveiled. First connected through radio, the two grew closer when Moon Won sent a DM on social media to ask permission to cover Shin Ji’s solo song. Even though the studio grew tense when the anecdote came out about Shin Ji scolding Moon Won for a long time at their first meal together, Moon Won recalled, “Still, she was beautiful,” showing his unwavering devotion.
They also spoke candidly about the various controversies they faced ahead of marriage. After the couple appeared on Shin Ji’s personal YouTube channel, various rumors about Moon Won flared up, but all were proven groundless. “Among those who made false tips was an acquaintance,” Moon Won recalled, looking back on that difficult time, while Shin Ji also shared her complicated feelings, saying, “It was a hellish year.”
Though the two went through a tougher year than anyone, they overcame it together and their trust grew stronger. To Shin Ji, who stood by him in the moment of crisis, Moon Won expressed gratitude: “Since someone else’s precious daughter held me, I cannot help but do even better,” and added, “My shoulders are broader than you think, so lean on me anytime.” Moved by his confession, Shin Ji shed tears and replied, “Let us live pretty and happy just for ourselves, not a life to show others,” revealing their steadfast affection for each other.
The ‘34-year twilight couple’ Park Mi-sun and Lee Bong-won showed a bond strengthened by enduring treatment together. Park Mi-sun, who was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2024, calmly recalled, “I told my husband by text instead of a call.” Lee Bong-won added, “Of course I was flustered. But no one has it harder than the person themselves,” and said, “I resolved then that I would absolutely take care of her,” adding to the poignancy. He went on to share that he accompanied her without fail to checkups every two weeks, quietly staying by his wife’s side.
Although they confirmed their deep affection by enduring the illness together, in daily life they showed real-life chemistry no different from any other couple. Making a surprise visit to Lee Bong-won’s ‘Bong House’ in Cheonan after a long time, Park Mi-sun discovered a messy refrigerator and a pile of dishes, unleashing a barrage of nagging. Even so, Lee Bong-won listened with one ear and let it out the other as he focused only on getting ready to go out, showcasing the real chemistry of a seasoned couple.
But an unexpected turn followed. It turned out that Lee Bong-won had carefully prepared a Cheonan date for the wife who came to see him. As their date was teased, laughter and fluttering excitement were sparked at once, and interest is rising in the ‘tsundere romance’ to be revealed.
Go Joon-hee revealed the reversal of the ‘Gojjok-i’ everyday life hidden behind her glamorous image. In front of her parents, she became nothing but a daughter again, bickering nonstop even over small chores like cleaning. She even threw a blunt question to her parents, who wanted a grandchild: “Can I have a child first?” turning everyone upside down. When her parents dissuaded her, saying, “How does it make sense to have a child before even marrying?” Go Joon-hee shot back, “I am saying it because you said you want a grandchild,” flaunting the unfiltered banter of a real family.
The mood shifted as the real reason she put off moving out and chose to live with her parents was revealed. During a health checkup at her suggestion, her father’s coronary issue was found, and he subsequently underwent surgery. Deeply shocked at the time, Go Joon-hee confessed, “I feel at ease only when I can see my parents with my own eyes,” deciding to live with them and moving viewers with her deep affection for her parents.
While episodes full of each family’s personality were shown, the studio featured MC Lee Soo-geun, along with Park Mi-sun and Lee Bong-won, Shin Ji, Go Joon-hee, and Jeon Min-gi. As they watched VCRs of each other’s daily lives, the cast exchanged frank opinions and at times offered heartfelt comfort and support. Their laughter and empathy at one another’s family stories provided viewers with another viewing point.
From its first broadcast, ‘Someone Else’s Precious Family’ formed empathy by honestly portraying families in whom love and conflict, worry and comfort coexist. Attention is gathering to what stories families with different relationships and backgroundsfrom newlyweds to seasoned couples to parents and childrenwill write going forward.
