“I felt like only a shell was left; I kept striving to find myself”

Marking the 40th anniversary of her debut, singer Kim Wan-sun appears on a terrestrial TV music program to share ‘real stories’ with the audience.

Kim Wan-sun, the eternal dancing diva of South Korea’s popular music scene, returns to the EBS ‘Space Gonggam’ stage after about six years to connect passionately with the audience.

In the EBS ‘Space Gonggam’ episode airing on the 3rd, she moves past the regret of her 2020 performance, which was held without an audience and conducted remotely due to the COVID-19 pandemic, unveiling a passionate stage filled with a packed house and fervent cheers.

This year, on the 40th anniversary of her debut, Kim Wan-sun plans to candidly share on stage her ‘real story’ that she had not previously revealed.

With the deep reflection, “Shouldn’t I try to tell my story before I die?”, Kim Wan-sun presents a flawless setlist that encapsulates her musical life. Beginning with the title track ‘Tonight’ from her 1986 debut album, era-shaking mega-hits such as ‘I Don’t Like It’, ‘Masquerade Ball’, ‘Monodrama’, ‘That Dance in the Rhythm’, and ‘Pierrot Laughs at Us’ fill the stage.

In particular, recalling the question she has been asked most over 40 years, Kim Wan-sun introduces ‘Monodrama’not widely known to the publicas the song she loves most. She says, “Because it is the song that best expresses me in its lyrics,” and, “I started working at too young an age, and as everything was controlled, at some point I felt as if only the shell remained and the inside had all disappeared. So I kept trying to find myself,” candidly confessing the loneliness hidden behind the glamorous lights and reportedly eliciting deep empathy.

On the broadcast, beyond moving performances, she delivers a special stage where she plays the piano herself, and, with an even more resonant and compelling voice that overwhelms the stage, proves her aura as a diva.
