Actor Park Sung-woong pulled off a major turnaround by clinching a spot in the final.
Episode 8 of the Netflix variety show ‘Death Game: The Final Winner’ (directed by Kwon Dae-hyun, produced by TEO), released on the 10th (Wed), featured a semifinal where the last three contestants battled for the final berth. Facing off were actor Park Sung-woong, a Hankuk University of Foreign Studies law graduate; Yurisa, a Mensa member with an IQ of 156; and Heo Seong-beom, a KAIST artificial intelligence researcher. Their fiercely cerebral showdown surpassed expectations and kept viewers on edge.
From the outset, the three generated palpable tension. Park Sung-woong projected an icy presence reminiscent of Lee Joong-gu from the film ‘New World’ and declared, “A heaven-sent opportunity,” revealing his will to win. Yurisa vowed, “I can’t back down after coming this far. I will make the final.” Having avenged himself against DinDin in a grudge match, Heo Seong-beom also made no secret of his drive for the final. Commentator Jang Dong-min said, “It wouldn’t be surprising no matter who wins,” foreshadowing the fiercest contest yet.

This round’s contest was ‘Tectonic Shift’, played on a board made of 120 hexagonal tiles. On collapsing ground, players block one another’s movement while advancing their pieces onto higher-value ground; each tile is marked from 1 to 5 points. With tile collapses and scoring occurring simultaneously, high-level calculation and move-trading were the keys.
Strategically, the three drew attention with different approaches. Park Sung-woong previewed a plan to “advance pieces aggressively and claim the high-point tiles first.” Yurisa declared a monopoly strategy centered on 5-point tiles, saying, “Securing points matters more than blocking.” By contrast, Heo Seong-beom looked to the long game of partitioning territory, saying, “Early points don’t matter.” Jang Dong-min said, “You need to wage diplomatic warfare strategically,” adding, “Who will cause a tectonic shift in the survival-game world?”
Once the game began in earnest, the trio engaged in an intense battle of wits from the opening. As previewed, Yurisa headed for the 5-point tiles, while Park Sung-woong moved the pieces most at risk of isolation first to keep his play stable. While Yurisa and Park contested the northwest, Heo Seong-beom stood out by being first to enter the south, where high-value tiles are concentrated, sketching out a big-picture plan. Commentator Jang Dong-min and caster Park Sang-hyun quipped, “The southern region is basically Cheongdam-dong,” and “They’re acquiring luxury boutiques one by one,” drawing laughs.
Unexpected mistakes and dramatic reversals followed. With each slipup, Jang Dong-min amped up the atmosphere with impassioned commentary. Tension peaked toward the endgame. While leading, Yurisa tried to end the game by isolating her piece, but a razor-thin battle continued unexpectedly, taking the match to the wire. In the end, amid an all-time muddle, the architect of the stunning reversal was Park Sung-woong. Heo Seong-beom lamented, “One unexpected major spoiler dragged the game along like this.”
Securing one additional seed and locking in the first berth in the final, Park Sung-woong said, “I never imagined it. I didn’t think I would reach the final,” adding, “I won’t be satisfied just by making the final. The ultimate goal is victory.” Yurisa said, “I once again felt the power of experience,” while Heo Seong-beom applauded, “Sung-woong hyung really should have made a mistake at least once, but he didn’tamazing.”
At the end of the broadcast, a rematch guillotine match between Yurisa and Heo Seong-beom was teased for the last ticket to the final. In particular, their 1:1 ‘Tectonic Shift’ showdown will apply modified rules, signaling another twist and ratcheting up the tension. With attention focused on who will join Park Sung-woong in the final, ‘Death Game Season 2’ streams every Wednesday at 5 p.m.
