From actor Son Seung-won's prison sentence to an appeal by the intruder at singer-actor Nana's home, and even the news of the death of Red Velvet's Seulgi's cousin and YouTuber Sukijin…. We have gathered the entertainment headlines for the 11th.
■ ‘Fifth DUI’ Son Seung-won, sentenced to one year in prison and taken into custody
Actor Son Seung-won was ultimately sentenced to a prison term and remanded in custody after being brought to trial on his fifth drunk-driving charge.
On the 11th, the Seoul Western District Court sentenced Son Seung-won, indicted on charges including drunk driving and instigating evidence concealment, to one year in prison. The court said it imposed a custodial sentence considering not only the drunk driving itself but also that he instructed his girlfriend to hide the car's black box and his repeated history of drunk driving.
However, factors in his favor included acknowledging the offense, submitting the black box during the investigation, the fact that it did not lead to an actual accident, and petitions for leniency from family and acquaintances. For Ms. Kim, the girlfriend indicted alongside him, the imposition of a 1.5 million won fine was suspended.
Son Seung-won was caught last November driving the wrong way on Gangbyeonbuk-ro while heavily intoxicated, and it was also revealed that he attempted false statements and evidence concealment during the police investigation. Previously, he had been sentenced to one year and six months in prison for a drunk-driving crash in 2018.
■ Appeal by intruder at Nana's home…disputes seven-year prison term
A man in his 30s, identified as A, who broke into singer-actor Nana's home and carried out a robbery, appealed after receiving a seven-year prison sentence at first instance.
According to Star News on the 11th, A, who was indicted on a charge of robbery resulting in injury, submitted a notice of appeal on the 10th.
Earlier, on the 9th, the Uijeongbu District Court sentenced A to seven years in prison. The court found A guilty of the offenses and recognized the responses by Nana and her mother while subduing him as legitimate self-defense.
A is accused of breaking into Nana's home last November, threatening Nana and her mother with a weapon, and attempting to take valuables. At the time, after a physical struggle, Nana and her mother subdued A and handed him over to the police.
During the trial, A denied the charges, saying “I did not carry a weapon,” and filed a countersuit against Nana on charges including attempted murder, claiming he was injured while being subdued. However, police deemed Nana's actions to be self-defense and did not refer the case for prosecution, and Nana has filed a counter-complaint against A for false accusation.
■ Red Velvet's Seulgi's cousin, YouTuber Sukijin, dies…sudden sad news
It was belatedly learned that Sukijin, Red Velvet's Seulgi's cousin and a YouTuber, has passed away.
On the 11th, on the YouTube channel ‘Sukijin’, someone presumed to be a family member posted a comment announcing the death: “Our beloved Su-jin became a star in the sky on June 7 due to a sudden accident.”
Sukijin became known through vlog videos filmed with Seulgi, and they had maintained a close relationship. In particular, for Sukijin, who lost her older sister at a young age, Seulgi was reportedly a special presence who filled the void of an older sister.
It has been only about two weeks since a video showing the two smiling brightly together was released on the 29th of last month, further deepening fans' sorrow at the sudden news.
