Director Na Hong-jin of the film ‘Hope’ pointed out that the meaning and central theme of the work are contained in the ending.

In an interview with Sports Kyunghyang held on the afternoon of the 7th in Samcheong-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Director Na Hong-jin said, “The most important thing in ‘Hope’ is that the answer is in the ending.”

Na said, “Although the story in the film is a tragic situation, every character has a purpose and a hope they wish to protect. Beom-seok (Hwang Jung-min) must, by any means, rescue this heart from the alien, and the alien, by any means, must achieve its own purpose,” and “These hopes and purposes collide, causing the tragedy in the film, but in the end do we not come to seek hope within it?”

He continued, “Viewers who watch the film will likely feel the same. In each individual situation, there is someone or something that must be protected and kept alive; for me, that may be cinema, and for someone else it may be something else,” and “I made this film with the thought that such hopes become faith and become evidence of another resurrection.”

He added, “To have ‘Hope’ (hope) is important, and if you have witnessed this tragedy for over two hours, I hope it becomes a film that, upon returning to our situation (reality), you can look back on and bring to a close,” and “Within ‘Hope’ I put the idea that even if tragedy occurs, we must find another hope within it.”

‘Hope’ is a work that depicts the story of Hopo Port outpost chief ‘Beom-seok,’ located in the Demilitarized Zone, who hears from village youths that a tiger has appeared and, as the whole village falls into confusion, faces an unbelievable reality. It opens on the 15th.
